Richard Omwela retained the Kenya Rugby Union Chairman’s post after topping the poll ahead with 25 votes of Alexander Mutai (23 votes) and Rajinder Sembi (9 votes) during the Annual General Meeting held at the RFUEA Ground on Wednesday 22 March 2017.
Three new directors were also elected to the board. The three directors are Sylvia Kamau (46 votes), Ray Olendo (37 votes) and Ezekiel Owuor (33 votes)who topped the polling for the four available seats alongside Ian Mugambi (38 votes) who was re-elected to the board for a second term.
Omwela will serve for another two years which might be his last as chair of Kenya rugby Union.
“It is my joy to be re-elected for another term. It gives me a chance to continue with the projects I had set in motion during my previous term,” he said.
Among the key ares Omwela said he wants to build on is to bring on board more sponsors to the union and bringing sanity back to the union that had been hugely divided previously forcing sponsors to walk away.
“My target now is to see Kenya to the 2019 Rugby World Cup,” he said.
“I will marshal all my energy towards having Kenya in the 2019 World Cup. It is an achievable goal if all the stakeholders work closely together,” he added.
Sylvia Kamau said he focus will be on women rugby which she stated had been neglected.
She said she will work towards building a strong league for the women and make the game more popular.
